I was thinking of Dave just yesterday, wondering how he was doing after seeing an old photo of our baseball team in 1966. We were friends from Oak Grove on through LCJHS and LCHS, and bonded through our mutual love of our national pastime. Dave had a unique sense of humor, and a fierce competitive spirit I will never forget. Its never easy losing an old friend, but this loss hits especially hard. Rest in peace, Huey.

Like Brian, I remember Dave from my earliest days in La Canada schools--from Oak Grove on up. I admired his dogged determination to succeed--especially in sports. I always hated to face Dave, because he was a lefty I couldn't hit that well and because he would always "bring it". I lost track of him after we graduated, trading a few brief messages over the years. From his obituary, however, it's obvious to me he applied those same innate traits of desire and determination to his life beyond the diamond. "Huey", indeed. He wore that nickname proudly and made it mean "hero" to his friends and family. RIP.

It's been a pleasure knowing you, too, Huey Bon Winkle. May you continue "making music" as you Rest In Peace my friend.

The moment I saw the post and Dave's big smile, I thought of Brian and Huey, and baseball - the mutual love of the national pastime, as Brian soon said. Somehow there's a way here for warmth and sadness to blend and occupy the same space in my heart, along with those special times we each recall with Dave and one another. I am trusting there is baseball in heaven; if there weren't, it wouldn't be heaven!  Not too far off now, sooner than when we started.
