David was a gentleman and an inspiration from the very beginning. And in my case, "the beginning" was my first year in Little League baseball. He was teammate, but more than a teammate, he was like another coach. He was like an adult  on the field in that he was so knowledgeable and so helpful. He wasn't competing. I got the feeling he wouldn't be disappointed if he never got to start, let alone play. He seemed to care more about the other kids' development and success than his own. But of course he did play, and he was the best, most natural player out there.

My dad was the team's manager (because no one else seemed interested). And Dad was never easily impressed, but he thought David was the most mature, caring and capable kid he'd ever encountered. And Dad taught junior high school for many years! "A gentleman," Dad called him.

Baseball, football--David excelled in both. But what he was really great at was being a man. A true man doesn't have to convince you of his manhood with feats of skill or bravado, he merely, and humbly ives it.
